Learning outcomes for Module 01 – Introduction to Project Management
We have four Learning Outcomes for this week. They are the following:
- Define project and routine work.
- Illustrate the project life cycle.
- Distinguish the relationship between projects and organization strategy.
- Evaluate project management process groups and knowledge areas.
Content
Module 1 is our formal introduction to the topic of project
management. Project management is defined and the role of project
managers explained. Projects are unique undertakings. It is important to
distinguish a project from routine work. Projects are temporary and
result in unique products, services, or results (Project Management
Institute, 2017). We can visualize projects as having a “life cycle”
including a start-up phase, building phase, maturing phase, and
termination phase (Meredith, Mantel, & Shafer, 2017). By contrast,
routine work may be continuous without distinct phases. For this week
and the entirety of this course, we focus on projects and project
management.
